Study of Zhang Zhong Jing’s Prescription in the Treatment of
Chronic Renal Failure

On the basis of a thorough exploration
of the etiology and pathogenesis of chronic ranal failure (CRF) and
long-term clinical tests, the author holds that this disease is the
result of spleen and kidney deficiency, causing stagnation of trubid
and toxic substances. It manifests excess syndrome in the cxterior but
deficiency syndrome in the interior. Patients suffering from this disease
are usually in want of such trace elements as Zn, Mn,Fe and Ca,and chitin.
This should be treated with the method of warming and reinforcing the
speeln and kidney, strengthening body resistance to remove the turbid
and toxic susbstances, promoting blood circulation and removing blood
stasis to promote diuresis. The prescripiton Decoction of Radix et Rhizoma
Rhei and Radix Aconiti by Zhang Zhong Jing in his book Synopsis of the
Golden Chamber is adopted for it. Bdsides, the autohor has developed
a series of non-dialysis therapies in light of the theories of chitin
and trace elements. They include treatments via navels, intravenous
drips, solution and oral administraion. The Shen Fu Kang Qi Dai(belt
for treatment via navels), Shen Shuai Ning Cuan Chang Ye (enema), Jiu
Shen Yao Rong Ye(solution),Shen Du Qing and Bu Shen Jiao Nang(capsule)
have been applied to 41 CRF cases and compared with the 21 cases treated
with dialysis therapy. It proved that the non-dialysis therapies in
the treamtemt group is markedly effective in relieving the symptoms,
improving the indexes of renal functions, decreasing blood creatinine,
increasing hematochromes, inproving renal anemia and life quality. In
terms of the therapeutic effect, the treatment group is superior to
the control group(p<0.01). In adddition, the former has a longer
effect, costs less, and is conventient and easily accepted by the patients.
Its advantages are especially seen when the patients have difficulty
taking medicines orally because of nausea and vomiting, when it is difficult
to apply intravenous drips in the case of edema, scanty urine and constipation.
It has been proved in clinic that these non-dialysis therapies play
an important role in saving the life and lengthening the life span of
such patients.
